I never expected that handing over my house keys to another family would hand me something far greater in return… a new way of seeing our own home. Because the surprising thing about house swapping isn’t just exploring a new place — it’s the way coming home feels different afterwards. It’s softer, clearer, more intentional and flooding with gratitude... almost like someone adjusted the lens and suddenly everything is in focus.
Preparing our home for house swaps has been such a blessing. YES, a whole lot of work each time we go away but it's welcome work. Its the motivation I need to begin the next declutter, the next clean....the next reset. Without these scheduled house swaps... I truly don't know if i'd ever find or intentionally make the time. Life is busy and if the WHY doesn't feel like a big enough pull, it simply wont get done... I'm old enough and wise enough to know myself in this way. But there is something so special about preparing your home for another family to enjoy. Knowing how appreciated it will be by others is a beautifully confirming feeling... and you know what... it's a win win really as we get to come home to a clean, decluttered home after an often long drive... it's bliss and truthfully one of the biggest joys of house swapping... COMING HOME!
The first time we had the chance to prepare our house for a swap I finally noticed things I had become accustomed to not noticing anymore... like really seeing the pile of “miscellaneous” that had blended into the hallway for months, cupboards filled with things no one uses, the way one room felt heavy and another felt light, how much we owned… without meaning to. It wasn’t shameful or overwhelming - just revealing. The chance to live in someone else’s space or for someone to live in ours, had created the motivation I needed for a gentle reset.
Every swap has brought my awareness to something different. In one home, everything had a place — nothing fancy, just thoughtful. I came home inspired to simplify and create some intentional changes to up my organisational game yet again. As I really do get inspired by fresh new ideas and love noticing more easeful ways for home life to flow. And once, we stayed somewhere that was full of colour and mismatched treasures. It reminded me that homes don’t need to match, they need to feel alive.
I started appreciating my home more deeply. It's like I returned home with my 'holiday vibe' lens on. The sunlight that comes through our bedroom window in the morning. The cosy spot on the couch that always feels like a hug. The noisy dishwasher that no longer turns on without the drawer being pushed in with your knee, that suddenly felt familiar and funny. Being away made me realise that our home already holds so much beauty that I’d stopped noticing simply because it was everyday. Sometimes leaving helps us return with gratitude instead of restlessness.
Living in other people’s homes taught me that a beautiful home isn’t the one with the most things, but the one that feels lived in, loved, and true to the people inside it. And sometimes, the gift of stepping into someone else’s life is returning to your own with more tenderness and gratitude. Maybe that’s the real magic of house swapping - not the places we visit, but the way it transforms the place we return to.
