I’m Mel — a creative, a mother, heart led biz owner, nature lover, photographer & adventurer who’s discovered that the most meaningful journeys aren’t about where we go, but who we travel with and how we do it.
Our family began house swapping as a practical, affordable way to explore new places. But what we found was something much deeper: a slower, simpler, more connected way of living — full of trust, kindness, and shared care. Here, I share stories, tips and resources for families who dream of travel that feels grounded, affordable, and filled with heart. OUR FAMILy's STORY!
A few years ago, our family had sold our caravan - ready to purchase a larger one as we loved the adventures we were able to have each school holiday with the kids. We were looking for a larger van, only to realise we also needed to upgrade the car to tow the van... between the upgraded car, the upsized van, the petrol it would cost to get it anywhere and then the increasing van site prices per night averaging around $100 per night for a powered site... we were quickly priced out of our Aussie Family dream of freedom and adventure. We realised that the biggest barrier to travel wasn’t time or desire — it was the cost.
But we found ourselves quickly exploring the question....
what if there was another way? Another way to explore, to see places we have never been, to meet our sense of adventure and do all of this whilst having a beautiful doggie (our giant Groodle Murphy) who we would never consider leaving in a kennel and not much play money in our budget..... there were many pieces of a puzzle to solve... but we knew deep down that there is always more than one way to do anything... so we started to get creative
We found ourselves wondering.....what if, instead of saving for years or cutting trips short, we could simply share our home with others doing the same? We lent into trust, addressed all the questions and doubts that surfaced, did our research and got to it... and before we knew it, we were away on our very FIRST HOUSE SWAP.
We had found a way to travel that felt 'just like home'.
Since that first swap, we’ve stayed in 20 different homes (so far) around Australia, in a variety of places such as city high rise apartments, cute cottages, state of art homes with expansive views, homes on canals, with pools, tennis courts (all of which we could never have afforded otherwise) all offering so many local treasures and locations to explore (many of which have been crazy stunning, places we may not have even known about or thought to explore if it wasn't for the opportunities and families that have reached out to us through house swapping. We found ourselves in awe and gratitude each time we arrived at the home, followed the instructions to find the key, opened the door and stepped inside to explore.
But as we began to settle into each swap we began to discover...
that the benefit ran way deeper than free or low cost getaways... Each swap has taught us something new — about trust, family, and what really makes us feel at home. We have discovered that true wealth lies in community, not currency. This way of holidaying has given us the biggest gift of all, a deeper trust and faith in humanity and a strong sense of adventure and possibility

It’s not about being fancy or perfect - it’s about sharing space, connection, and adventure in a way that feels easy, kind, and real.
How do I know I can trust the people I’m swapping with?
This is one of the first questions everyone asks - and it’s such an important one.
Trust in house swapping grows through honest communication, clear boundaries, and mutual respect.
You’ll usually connect through a trusted platform or community, exchange lots of messages, and often video chat before confirming the swap.
What I’ve found again and again is this: when you lead with warmth and clarity, people reflect that energy right back.
Isn’t it strange having people in your home?
It might feel that way at first - but it quickly becomes something quite beautiful.
When you prepare your home with care and intention, it becomes a space of generosity.
There’s something profoundly heart warming about knowing another family is creating memories in your space - just as you are in theirs.
And returning home to find it lovingly cared for? That’s when you realise how much goodness is still out there in the world.
What about my belongings — is it safe?
Absolutely - and you always set your own boundaries.
You can lock away or mark any spaces that are private, like a cupboard or office.
Most families are incredibly respectful, often more so than traditional guests, because you’re swapping homes - not renting.
It’s a relationship built on mutual understanding. Its an invisible promise "I’ll care for your home the way I’d hope you’d care for mine"
How do I prepare my home for a swap?
Think of it as creating a welcoming space for a friend.
Tidy up, leave clear instructions for appliances, and make sure things feel fresh and inviting.
I love adding a small welcome note or something personal - like a few local tips or a homemade treat.

How do we find families to swap with?
You can join trusted online swap platforms (there are a few wonderful ones I can recommend), or connect through word-of-mouth and local communities.
Once you’ve created your listing with honest photos and a heartfelt description, families will begin reaching out - and soon, you’ll find the ones that feel aligned.
It’s a bit like dating for homes - connection, communication, and intuition all play a part.
What if something goes wrong?
In all our swaps, the very few “hiccups” we’ve had were small and easily resolved - a lightbulb out, a forgotten item left at the house, a minor miscommunication, minor accidental damage.
Because both families are invested in kindness, things are handled with understanding and grace.
With clear communication (and a good user manual or checklist), you can prevent most issues before they ever arise.
How does it work financially?
That’s one of the most freeing parts!
Most swaps are completely cost-free - no accommodation payments, just a mutual exchange.
You may choose to split utility costs if it’s a long-term swap, but otherwise, your main expenses are travel and food.
It’s an incredible way to travel more often, for longer periods, and in far greater comfort - without stretching your finances.
How do kids usually handle swapping homes?
Children tend to surprise us - they adapt beautifully!
Mine have learned so much through this lifestyle: respect for others’ belongings, creativity in making new spaces feel like “theirs,” and deep empathy for other families.
They often leave little treasures or notes behind for the next kids, creating a lovely thread of connection between homes.
